We have Authority

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.’ John 20:21

We must always keep in the forefront of our mind what it is that Jesus has asked of us.  He has asked us to go into the world and do what He did to share His truth.

So we start with why Jesus came to the world in the form of man.

Our typical answer: He came to die for our sins, to save the world from eternal torment.

This is absolutely true. He did come to earth to be crucified…to take our place on the cross, to become sin, so we could live with Him eternally in Heaven, even though we turn our back on Him and sin.

So, that is why He came and died.

BUT, why did He LIVE? Why did He do the things He did during His life? Those are the questions that lead us to our calling because as He was sent, He has sent us.

What did He do? ‘You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.’ Acts 10:38

Should we really think that God came to earth to do some miracles just to prove He is God? Should we really think that He gave the Apostles the same authority He had, just to have that authority to end after they died?  I don’t think so.

What was the purpose of Jesus doing miracles? He did say that his works were to prove who He was. But, He wasn’t out to prove that He was God’s Son.  He is not an egotist trying to show how wonderful He is because He wants the recognition. He only wants us to know that He gives eternal life and sets us free from the devil so that we will come to Him.  His miracles proved what He said was true, so that we would believe that He is the ONLY path to eternal life.

How do we know that His miracles were not just His attempt to show off?

Because, He gave the same authority to the apostles and they went about doing the work of the Kingdom. Healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing the lepers, casting out demons.  They weren’t out proving they were the Savior of the world. They were proving the will of God was for everyone to be set free and saved, living in eternal life.

Jesus is the same always (Hebrews 13:8). That means that He is never-changing. His will has always been to have a people to love and that love Him willfully in return.

But, we live in a fallen world until it is made new again, without sin. Therefore, there are people in this world that have been oppressed by the devil and they need to be set free.

So, Jesus came to the earth, 100% God and 100% man, doing miracles to show us what is possible.  Then He told us that His miracles were just the beginning, and that we would do greater miracles (John 14:12).  We know He wasn’t just talking to the apostles that were present because they didn’t really do anything that was greater than the miracles than Jesus did. He was speaking to all of His followers, in that day and the days to follow.

It is our calling to go out and do the works of the Father, revealing to the world that Jesus is alive and wants all to be set free from all oppression of the devil.

Jesus is the answer to every problem in the world.  He wants to reveal all the answers and set all free.  But, we are going to share in His inheritance. Therefore, He has given us the opportunity to join in His works.

The Holy Spirit provides the power. We simply go into the world just as Jesus did and proclaim the Truth.

We have His authority. He gave it to us. He gave us His authority to be used in His name to do good.

Let us go into the world and operate in the authority we have…

I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.’ Luke 10:19
